True Cut Tree is a locally owned, family-operated business serving Virginia’s New River Valley since 2021. It was founded by David Marrale, whose experience with trees did not start with a logo, it started in the forest.
David has felled timber by hand for the U.S. National Forest Service, worked draft horses to pull logs from terrain machines cannot reach, and built homes from the foundation up in residential construction. Good pruning is as much about knowing what not to cut as what to cut, and that judgment comes from decades of working with trees up close. What is the difference between tree trimming and pruning?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a simple distinction: trimming is usually about shape, clearance, and appearance, while pruning is about the tree’s health and structure. Pruning targets dead, diseased, or weak limbs and improves how the tree grows, while trimming keeps it clear of your home and looking tidy. Most trees benefit from both, and we handle them together as part of one visit.
When is the best time to trim or prune trees in the New River Valley?

What is crown reduction, and when is it needed?
Crown reduction is the careful shortening of a tree’s overall height and spread by selectively cutting back to healthy growth points. It is used when a tree has simply gotten too big for its space, is leaning over a structure, or is catching too much wind. Done correctly it lowers risk while keeping the tree’s natural shape, which is very different from topping, a harmful practice we do not use.
